Supporting AI/AN Head Start in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Region: A Journey to Bethel, Alaska

As the chilly wind of November swept through the Pacific Northwest, and an atmospheric river brought torrential downpours that filled the rivers and creeks, I found myself brimming with anticipation and excitement that only a new project and adventure can bring. I was preparing to embark on a journey to Bethel, Alaska, the small but bustling hub of the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta.

My mission: the first of several planned site visits with the local AI/AN Head Start program to lay the foundation for a Comprehensive Community Needs Assessment project that promises to be a pivotal step in supporting sustainable and streamlined early learning services for the 56 Native villages in the region.

Going The Extra Mile(s)

Planning a trip from Northwest Washington to the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta in winter is not for the faint of heart. The harsh Alaskan winter presents unique logistical challenges, but the rewards are immeasurable. The crisp air, snow-covered landscapes, and the pristine beauty of Alaska in its winter splendor are a sight to behold. It’s a reminder that nature’s beauty can be found in all seasons, and as educators, we must meet our families and children where they are if we want to truly understand their strengths and challenges.

The Importance of Being There

One of the core beliefs at Little Hawk Consulting is the importance of presence. While technology has opened doors to virtual collaboration, there’s no substitute for being on the ground, in person to connect and build relationships. This is especially true for AI/AN Head Start Consultants who work in Native American and Alaska Native communities.

My passion for Alaska is deeply rooted in my childhood.

During my visit to Bethel, I had the privilege of meeting the dedicated Head Start and early childhood program leaders, supporting team building, and engaging with Policy Council parent representatives. These meetings allowed us to forge personal connections and gain a deeper understanding of the unique strengths and challenges of each village community. This is about more than just gathering data; it’s about immersing myself in the community’s culture and learning how I can support programs to create processes that last long after my work is done.

A Love Born in Alaska

My passion for Alaska is deeply rooted in my childhood. I grew up on remote islands in Southeast Alaska, where I learned the value of living sustainably from the land and sea. My dad was a fisherman, and I was taught the importance of taking only what we needed so that future generations could share in the same resources. My love for Alaska and its communities has always been a driving force in my work and family. As a mom of Alaska Native kids, I now share these same teachings and respect for our lands and natural resources. Bringing my family home to Southeast Alaska this summer, and this visit to Bethel has only deepened my commitment.

Looking Ahead

As I look ahead to the Comprehensive Community Needs Assessment project, I do so with a heart full of gratitude and hope. Bethel and the entire Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta Region have a robust AI/AN Head Start and early childhood services program network, and I am honored to be working with such a dedicated and passionate team.

In the end, it’s not just about the logistics of travel or the assessments we conduct. It’s about the people, the communities, and the shared vision of a brighter future for our children. I am ready to embrace the Alaskan winter, learn from the wisdom of the locals, and work tirelessly to empower Alaska Native communities in the Y-K Delta and beyond. It may be a long journey, but we have started walking it together and I am confident we will reach the end stronger and ready for the next challenge.

Check back for more updates as this project continues. With a dedicated and experienced team on the ground and decades of cumulative knowledge, this Comprehensive Community Needs Assessment will provide years of valuable data, information, and feedback for the program and Tribe. I am honored to be part of this process and am looking forward to working with the team through this project and more.
